I have jumped ahead of my notes from my field reports- 13 February; 14 February; 26 February- single sightings of Goshawk in Benson; 1 male, 1 probable male, and 1 male respectively.
My profile is my cardinal rules. 1) Northern Goshawks are moving into cities and suburbs and have been doing so for many years. 2) Northern Goshawks are not "habitat conscious", they are "prey conscious", and do not look just for prey, but for large quantities of prey, and large quantities of prey can be found in cities and suburbs. 3) Northern Goshawks love the wind, sun, clouds , and thermals; Cooper's don't- but do- during migration . 4) To observe a perched goshawk is a rare event, but this rare event is but one side of a coin. Northern goshawks can be an elusive subject, but not in the sky! 5) You show me doves- and I will show you goshawks. You show me pigeons- and I will show you goshawks. You show me quail- and I will show you goshawks!
